Advanced Learner Options

Arvada High School offers a variety of advanced classes and programs to meet the needs of our most advanced students.

Ascent Program at Arvada High School

The Ascent program allows students who qualify to receive college credit for courses taken at Arvada High School and, optionally, to remain enrolled as a high school student for a fifth year while attending classes at Red Rocks Community College for a very minimal fee.  Students are tested with the Accuplacer test and those that meet the score requirements can take classes taught by college-approved faculty at AHS.  Students who take these classes receive college credit for completing the course; they do not have to take and pass an additional test as they would with an Advanced Placement class. The college credits can transfer to any Colorado College or University including the University of Colorado, Colorado State University and the Colorado School of Mines.  The only cost to students is a transcript fee of approximately $15.

Advanced Placement Classes and the Legacy Foundation Grant

Like most comprehensive high schools, AHS offers a wide variety of Advanced Placement courses.  These courses are taught at a college-level and require teacher approval to enroll.  At the conclusion of the course, students take a nationally standardized test and colleges choose to award credit based on the test score.

In 2012, Arvada High School was awarded a grant from the Legacy Foundation.  This grant provides funding to provide extra support for Advanced Placement students and their teachers.  Students are able to participate in extra test preparation courses on Saturdays with transportation provided.  Teachers receive funds for additional classroom materials and technology.  In addition, students who score well on the AP test are paid for their efforts.  In 2013, some students received as much as $400 on top of the college and high school credits for completing the class and scoring well on the tests.
