School

Arvada High School (AHS) is a school with a rich history. In existence for over 100 years, it has successfully weathered many building, curriculum, and community changes. AHS is one of 18 comprehensive high schools in the Jefferson County School District R-1, the largest K-12 district in Colorado serving over 85,000 students. The school calendar is composed of two eighteen-week semesters and is 176 days in length. The daily class schedule features a modified block plan where students attend 50-minute classes 1 day a week. The block period is a 90-minute class that meets 2 days a week. Several school-wide programs strengthen the academic and personal success of AHS students. The “Link Leader” program connects freshmen with upper-class students during an orientation day and in activities throughout the school year. 


Community

Located 15 miles northwest of Denver, Colorado, Arvada High School has a strong tradition of community support. The community and student populations represent a wide variety of ethnic, economic, and academic backgrounds. This occurrence lends a cultural richness to the school environment that is reflected in both classroom discussions and interpersonal relationships among students. The nearby Arvada Center for the Performing Arts provides numerous opportunities for students and community residents to enjoy a diverse array of programs. 


Faculty and Staff

The AHS faculty and staff work closely with students and are available for additional assistance and instruction during Access time. Many faculty members hold vocational credentials, Master’s, and Doctorate degrees. 


Enrollment

The class of 2016 had a mean ACT composite score of 18.2 with 98% of the class tested during the spring of 2015. Approximately 83% of the graduates from the class of 2016 planned to continue with a post-secondary education: 28% planned to attend four-year colleges and universities, 55% planned to attend two-year or technical institutions, additionally 6% planned military service. There are approximately 800 students enrolled for the 2016-2017 school year. The ethnic population distribution for 2015-2016 was: White 46%, Hispanic 42%, Asian/Pacific Islander 5%, American Indian 2%, African-American 2%. The free and reduced lunch rate was 64%.

Grading Scale:

90-100=A; 80-89=B; 70-79=C; 60-69=D; Below 60=F

A=4.0 B=3.0 C=2.0 D=1.0

P = passing and does not calculate into GPA

Honors and AP classes are weighted. Weighted grades are marked using the following scale:

A=5.0 B=4.0 C=3.0 D= not weighted



Course Offerings

Honors Level: English/Language Arts grades 9-1, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calc/Trig, Biology, Chemistry, U.S. Government, World Geography, and Economics.
Advanced Placement: English Language & Composition, English Literature & Composition, Calculus AB, and U.S. History.
